Travel Writing Cuba - A Photographic Journey Jay Mitchell is the photographer and author of the new book ‘Cuba - A Photographic Journey’. In 2010 Jay took time out from working and living in an often chaotic London to take a journey across Cuba. This is a photographic journey through places in Cuba with the stunningly colourful buildings, the old American cars, Flamingos in Cayo Coco and landscapes that stretch out across the beautiful island of Cuba. People go about their daily life in Cuba with a smile as bright as the sunshine that falls across Cuba. The places visited in the book are, Havana, Ciénaga de Zapata, Cienfuegos, Camagüey, Playa Santa Lucía, Bayamo, El Cobre, Santiago de Cuba, Baracoa, Guantánamo, Guardalavca, Holguín, Caya Coco, Morón, Trinidad, Santa Clara, Varadero, Pinar del Rio and Vinales. On reflection my trip across Cuba has been a long road trip with nearly 5000 kilometres covered in that time and over 20 key places in Cuba visited along the way and without doubt Cubans are very considerate and helpful, which makes you feel and at home here. Cuba - A Photographic Journey Endorsements: ‘A colourful journey with a photographic look at travelling through Cuba. Jay has unique personal narratives, anecdotes and stories which accompany his images of his journey through Cuba. He has captured people living in Cuba and what you are likely see when travelling through this beautiful country with his photos of Cuban life, vibrant colourful buildings, American cars and wildlife become one in his journey.’ Ranulph Fiennes - Explorer Many of those I have met travelling say the same thing ‘I am here before it changes into one great big MacDonald’s!’ and I really hope this doesn’t happen, but as a realist I know that commercialism will change Cuba but it’s the people that make this country what it is, with the stunning landscapes, colourful buildings and old vehicles that take to the roads. With Che Guevara having freed Cuba to the people with Fidel Castro I hope that in time it is released to them with freedom and not as a measured and limited amount of freedom with the way that communism has treated the Cubans, this would be great to see. This book is a photographic journey through some of the most amazing landscapes, animal life, plant life and outstanding ancient ruins from previous cultures seen anywhere on the planet. The severe change in weather from Patagonia in the winter to Colombia in spring, the changing seasons and the many different indigenous (indigenas) cultures, with varying ethnic clothing and foods it was easy to lose track of time and just enjoy the surroundings. 'I found that the highlights of my journey were the ‘Lost City’ (Ciudad Perdida) and Isla Gorgona in Colombia, Ushuaia National Park (covered in snow) in Argentina, Uyuni Salt Flats in Bolivia, Cuyabeno in the Amazon in Ecuador and of course the relaxed Huachachina Oasis (sand boarding) in Peru. Going to so many amazing places and meeting the indigenous people and being able to study their culture brought about my anthropological days again. Whilst often travelling alongside other travellers I often found the locals so accommodating and even if they had nothing they are always still trying to give. My premise when writing the book was to move away from a very wordy type of guide to something a lot more photographic, where you are able to make plans of wanting to visit a place I have photographed, revisit memories of when you have been there yourself or revel in what South America has to offer in its beauty. Please view the images below. He has also had the book endorsed by Ranulph Fiennes arguably one of the greatest explorers of our time, he wrote: ‘A refreshing look at a journey through South America with a blend of beautiful photographs taking you from end to end of South America with unique personal narratives, anecdotes and stories which accompany the images of this journey. Jay has captured the essence of South America and what you are likely see when travelling through this beautiful continent, where cultures, vibrant colours and wildlife become one in his journey.’ Ranulph Fiennes - Explorer The book was on show at the London Book Fair 2010 at Earls Court in London (http://www.londonbookfair.co.uk/) and could be found at various Independent bookshops in London, please go to the 'Shop' page. Jay is also working on new Travel Writing material currently with a view to releasing a new book and articles to be published in travel magazines and other magazines.
